(Beijing, April 16) The "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 China Club Volleyball Tournament opened at the Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium on April 16, with the Bayi men's team winning its opener over Shanghai 3-2 in the preliminaries.
Shanghai set the pace early in the match, winning the first set 25-21 and Bayi tied the score by prevailing in the second 25-19.
The game was leveled at 2-2 after Bayi and Shanghai winning the third (25-22) and fourth (25-21) respectively. In the decisive set, Bayi gained an 8-1 lead and maintained its advantage for good, winning 15-7.
Li Haiyun, head coach of Bayi, praised his players for doing a good job scoring block points in the win.
He Jiong, captain of the Shanghai's team, attributed the loss to many unforced errors and blocks in the match. He blamed himself for failing to do well as a playmaker.
"The venue is rather big and the players looked not seasoned with either the site or the lighting," disclosed Ju Genyin, Shanghai's head coach, after the match.
