SHH, TIJ women meet army's teams in finals

(Beijing, April 19) The semifinals of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 China Club Volleyball Tournament concluded at the Capital Indoor Stadium this evening. Both Bayi men's and women's teams won spots in the finals while the Shanghai men's team and Tianjin women's team also made it to the finals respectively.

On the men's side, Bayi came from one set down to beat Henan 3-1 (16-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-16). The Bayi players will meet No. 2 seed Shanghai, who gained a 3-1 victory over third seed Liaoning in the other semifinal. Shanghai won by the score of 16-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-16.

On the women's side, the Bayi women's team beat Liaoning 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-17, 25-23). Bayi opened the match with 8-5 at the first technical timeout and extended the lead to 11-6. Liaoning took a timeout and its players responded by pulling to within one, 19-18. Bayi varied its play to secure the win 25-20. Liaoning led 8-5 at the first technical timeout in the second set and kept ahead 16-10 at the second timeout before taking it 25-16. Bayi set up a 17-11 late in the third set to win 25-17 and took over the match from a 22-all tie in the fourth, entering the final on 25-23.

Tianjin also qualified for the women's final after beating Jiangsu in style in three straight sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-18). Tianjin used stable defense and fast attack to win the first set 25-17. Tianjin opened the second set 7-3 and Jiangsu cut the deficit by one to 8-7. A 10-3 run helped Tianjin regain the control of the match, 18-10. Jiangsu took two timeouts later but still fell 25-20. The score was tied at 5-all early in the decisive set before Tianjin reached the first technical timeout on a 3-1 run and 8-6 margin. The Tianjin players found their forms since the TO and scored on consecutive points to secure the 25-18 win.
