Volleyball event concludes as Bayi, Tianjin atop

(Beijing, April 20) The "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 China Club Volleyball Tournament concluded at the Capital Indoor Stadium this evening as Bayi and Tianjin beat their final rivals to win the men's and women's titles respectively.

On the men's side, Bayi clinched the title by beating Shanghai in three straight sets this afternoon. Bayi continued their outstanding form in the tournament as they made short work of the first set 25-15. Shanghai suffered poor first pass in the second set, falling again, 25-18. A brilliant defense in the third set pushed the army's team past Shanghai 25-18 to win the title.

Earlier, Liaoning beat Henan 3-1 in the bronze medal match to win the third.

On the women's side, Tianjin came from 2-1 down to beat Bayi 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-10). Tianjin used tight defense and varied plays to win the first set 25-22. Bayi recovered in the second by focusing on block and attack, winning 25-18. Bayi reached the second technical timeout in the third with a lead of 16-12 and widened the cushion to win 25-19. The fourth set turned out to be fiercer as the score was Bayi up 8-6 at the first timeout. The army's team maintained the lead to 16-10 at the second TO only to find Tianjin knot the score at 21, and then 23. Two counterattacks lifted Tianjin to a 25-23 win.

Tianjin set the pace early in the final set, 5-2. Bayi called a timeout while trailing 9-5 and the players responded to manage within two, falling 10-8. Tianjin took another timeout to cool down before capturing the gold medal point to win 15-10.

In the third place decider, Liaoning edged Jiangsu 3-2 for the bronze.

The five-day "Good Luck Beijing" volleyball event was held successfully both in the renovated Capital Indoor Stadium (CAS), main volleyball venue for the Beijing Olympic Games, and the Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium.

Speaking of the two venues, FIVB Executive Vice-President Wei Jizhong noted that both sites qualify for hosting top standard international competitions.

Players and coaches also echoed Wei's comment, adding that the service of the organizing committee was satisfactory indeed.
